Several of you asked for the article in full to which I referred this morning from David Foster Wallace.

A member of our church (and our neighbor here in the Cliff!) passed the article  along to me.  In addition to Wallace’s winsome prose, his insight into the human condition is remarkable.  He seemed to understand so much, and yet seemed to disallow the possibility that the very means by which we are liberated from the idolatries to which we are so prone does not exist in us naturally.

I know it may feel a little odd to take an inventory of this nature if you’re dating.  But if you both feel comfortable enough to hear what it may reveal, then why not?  It’s not meant to be a substitute for the wisdom of friends, relatives, and mentors, as they discern your relationship.  It can be a helpful supplement, though.  It’s not measuring “compatibility.”  It is identifying agreement and disagreement within the relationship on matters of consequence.  So, if you’re game, give it a whirl.

How do you make decisions? Important decisions? Which criteria appears at the top of the list?

Here’s one reputable source’s comment on how he finds guidance for matters of consequence–or more precisely, what he doesn’t look to for guidance.

In April, we’re going to devote time to the topic of discernment. Your servant-leadership team came to the conclusion during a discussion several weeks ago that one of the things of which young adults are most desirous, but find most elusive, is that of discernment. Discerning not just between what is wise and foolish, but between any number of ostensibly wise choices. A recent book by Tim Challies takes up the issue. I’ve begun it and would love to hear your thoughts, too, if you happen to have an interest in what he has to say.
